In the 1940s, Catholics in west Miami attended Gesu, one of the city’s five parishes. The need for another parish prompted the formation of Saint Michael the Archangel in 1946, the first Mass celebrated in September of that year at the at the Miami Senior High School’s Auditorium. Worshipers established religious education classes held in private homes and volunteered as altar servers.

St. Timothy was founded in 1960, and Mass, was celebrated in the auditorium of Southwest Miami High School by Father Thomas O’Donovan, pastor of the neighboring St. Brendan. As the parish grew, arrangements were made with University of Miami to obtain a WWII barracks, being discarded by the institution. Renovation to the building cobbled together, gutted inside and out began in July 1961. Except for plumbing and electrical work, parishioners, using donated materials, completed all renovations. Food Fair Stores donated the altar rail, the shelves, and showcases for the gift shop.
St Vicent Church
6350 NW 18th St, Margate, FL 33063
Established in 1960, Saint Vincent serves Margate area Catholics. The first Mass was celebrated under a donated tent, but within a year, parishioners had constructed a church. Later, parishioners erected a community center with eight classrooms and a large hall suitable for the parish’s educational, social, and fund-raising activities.
